The College of Medicine at the University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa organised a scientific workshop entitled “Misuse of Psychoactive Substances: Psychological and Physical Effects and Methods of Treatment.” The workshop was delivered by the consultant psychiatrist Dr Jasim Mohammed Hashem Al-Mousawi and attended by a number of students from the college as well as individuals interested in public health issues.
The workshop highlighted the health, psychological, and social consequences of the misuse of psychoactive substances. It emphasised that addiction represents a growing social challenge that requires a coordinated response from academic, healthcare, and security institutions. The session also reviewed the most significant physical and psychological complications associated with addiction, along with modern therapeutic approaches in psychiatry and rehabilitation programmes.
The workshop stressed the importance of strengthening awareness and prevention programmes among young people. It also highlighted the role of educational institutions in promoting health literacy in order to reduce the spread of this phenomenon and limit its negative consequences, including increased crime and social fragmentation.
The organisation of this workshop aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through the promotion of mental health and the reduction of harmful substance use. It also supports Goal 4 (Quality Education) by using the university environment to raise health awareness and build a society that is better informed about the risks of addiction and methods of prevention.
